Yiyeon Kim is a London-based South Korean artist working across kinetic sculpture, installation and performance. Her practice explores the contradiction between technology and social systems expanding human possibilities while also directing behaviour in particular ways. Using everyday objects and overlooked materials, she disrupts familiar functions through malfunction, failure and humour. At Joya, Yiyeon drew inspiration from living organisms responding to different environmental conditions, exploring how human and non-human life adapt to their surroundings. Her research considers how we continually adjust their behaviour in relation to nature, technology and social systems, while questioning the tendency to accept given conditions as fixed.
