Sonya Smullen, is theatre maker and scenographer from Glasgow, now based in London. Working across performance, spatial design and installation, Sonya explores how bodies, objects and sound can construct environments and shape our experience of the world. Her practice is rooted in improvisation, collaboration and site-responsive processes, drawing on traditions of mime, farce and movement-based theatre. During her time at Joya, Sonya investigated performance beyond text-based structures, using music, image, movement and somatic practices to respond directly to the desert environment. Exploring space as an active participant rather than a backdrop, she developed new approaches to performance shaped by Joya’s vast landscape, silence, atmosphere and shifting conditions.
