Royal College of Art (group residency) / Shuqi Kang

Shuqi Kang is a sculptor. Her practice centres on “fluidity,” focusing on how energy, emotion, and power move through the body. She is drawn to moments when this flow is blocked or forced to change course—when anger is swallowed, care becomes obligation, and women are expected to endure and told they “shouldn’t be angry.”

Her earlier research into family structures and intergenerational power made her realise that these forces do not remain at the level of thought; they accumulate in posture, breath, and the body itself. For her, the act of making becomes a way of sensing these internal movements in herself and in others.

In terms of materials, she works primarily with composite and mixed-media combinations, and has developed a recurring motif: the jujube seed, a diamond-like form derived from the pit of a red date. It can be read as a vulva, but also as an eye or a mouth—pointing to looking, being looked at, and the attempt to speak.

In partnership with the Royal College of Art, this group residency at Joya: AiR was curated by guest artist Annie Edwards (GBA 26, MA RCA, BFA) www.annieedwards.com
