“AIR ROCK WATER
Permanence / Impermanence
The journey through the landscape to Los Vélez properly indicates the surface of the
planet in a way which is not normally apparent to me.
Rocks have been witness to the history of the place, carrying information which has
existed for millennia. They hold imprints created by air, water and early life forms.
Selecting examples from an abundance of stones, I made a record of some
of this information using print, drawing and photography.
Though the solidity of a stone might suggest permanence, by continuing with
this exercise I want to maintain some sense of fragility, representing the rock we
I am now looking for very specific materials and processes. The choices I make will
depend on environmental impact as well as texture, weight and other observable
characteristics. The concept and the material need to exist in equal balance.
About Joya: AiR
Two weeks working in a friendly environment in which contemplation or interaction can
be freely chosen has been an invaluable opportunity. Listening to people talking about
their work, including looking at the night sky with an artist who is working with scientists
involved with new discoveries, has been an important element of the residency”.
